We said yes to starting a school, not just for our son, but because the Lord showed us that our struggle to find a safe, loving, Christian school was not unique but quite common. The Lord had a solution. A school centered on Him, committed to welcoming students of all abilities - the strong and the weak.
Looking back, it’s not surprising we find ourselves at the precipice of starting a school. As I reflect on the early years of our son’s diagnoses, we were greatly concerned that he would not be able to attend a Christian school because they often do not have the resources to welcome, let alone serve, students of varied learning styles. But, my heart longed for him to experience a Christian school's loving, nurturing environment.
When the time came to start preschool, we began advocating for him to be integrated into class with his typical peers. God began opening doors for him. From 3 years old until age 5, he was integrated with peers at Christian preschools with the help of committed teachers willing to try new things and welcome him to the class.
Our Christian education options narrowed as kindergarten approached, and doors seemed to close right and left. Praying and believing the Lord had something great for our son, we pressed forward, exploring options that led us to Concordis Educational Partners. Like us, they believe that children with autism and various cognitive disorders should not be relegated to "special" schools. Instead, they should live and learn in a community with their peers. Like us, they believe all children should have access to quality Christian education and have an opportunity to reach their God-given potential. After a few meetings and time in prayer, we knew the next step. The answer was as obvious as a giant neon sign pointing “this way.” Our response was nothing but, “Ok, God, let’s do this!” And Arrows Christian Academy was born.
