We take a one-room schoolhouse approach within mixed-age learning groups. Our 12 to 1 student-to-teacher ratio ensures all learners receive individualized education and cover content at a deeper level. Our mixed-age classrooms provide students who are neurotypical or neurodiverse, the opportunity to experience content at their ability level, rather than by age-assigned standards. Most students are in the same learning group all day, but some move for math and/or reading.
Math and reading classes are offered at simultaneous times across the school, enabling students to move up or down a learning group as needed. Our math curriculum focuses on developing critical thinking and problem solving as well as fluency. Our reading program is phonics based and incorporates multi-sensory activities. Science is taught through hands-on experiments at the early stages, while older students learn important scientific skills through investigating God's creation.
Each day we have a 2 hour block for integrated humanities. Humanities incorporates reading, writing, poetry, grammar, spelling, history, language, and Bible. Writing is taught using scaffolded instruction and rich application through Greek writing exercises called Progymnasmata. Each year we move through a different era of time in our humanities block. This year our school-wide theme is Ancient World.
We offer a robust academic program, rooted in joy! Our goal is to move beyond teaching concrete concepts in a way that fosters an intense love for learning, creativity, and God's world.
Core class instruction takes place on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, but students who attend our Monday and Friday program have the option to round out their education with enrichment activities such as drama, art, music, STEM, physical education, and in-person personalized tutoring.
Our unique educational model enables homework to be minimal and targeted. Homework will be limited to small reading assignments on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Additionally, students in grades 3+ will have 3 hours of work, sent home Thursday to be completed by Tuesday.
We study the story of God's world and mankind, by moving through historical eras of time on 4-year rotating basis: Ancient Times, Middle Ages, Early Modern Times, and The Modern Age. This integrated Humanities core encompasses: History, Literature, Bible, Writing, public speaking skills, music & art.
We study various scientific topics within each learning group, placing a special emphasis on hands-on science experiments and the scientific method. As with humanities, we rotate through 4 fields of scientific study. This year our focus is Biology.
We want our students to deeply grasp mathematical concepts and ideas, moving beyond merely knowing how to solve specific problems. In addition, we want them to express their thinking with others as they work to mastery. Our math curriculum spirals content each year, moving from visual/concrete to the abstract, seamlessly over 5 learning levels. This structure allows students who need more time to progress, the opportunity to remain in a learning group multiple years, and those who are ready to move on, the ability to fast track.
We intentionally integrate music, visual art, and movement into all our core classes with 2 additional 30 minute blocks specifically designated for movement and art/music. More extensive sessions are offered in our Monday and Friday program.
